Meeting Held with Parents and Caregivers of Persons with Intellectual and Psychosocial Disabilities
The Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Protection, in
cooperation with the General Authority for Development of Persons with
Disabilities, organized a meeting with parents, caregivers, and representatives
of non-governmental organizations to hear their views and concerns.
Among different types of disabilities, persons with
intellectual and psychosocial disabilities often face significant challenges in
expressing themselves, communicating with others, and participating in society.
According to the National Statistics Office, as of the end
of 2024, Mongolia has 107,900 persons with disabilities, of whom 19.7 percent
(21,200 individuals) have psychosocial disabilities. Of these, 9.8 percent
(2,086) are children aged 0–15, 87 percent (18,448) are individuals aged 15–64,
and 3.2 percent (681) are elderly persons aged 65 and above.
More than 70 participants, including citizens and NGO
representatives, attended the meeting and shared their perspectives on key
challenges. These included issues related to classification and diagnosis of
intellectual and psychosocial conditions, access to medication, availability of
health and education services, diversity of rehabilitation and development
services, employment opportunities, and access to social welfare support.
Participants also emphasized the need to address, at the policy
level, the health, psychological well-being, social engagement, and employment
challenges faced by parents and caregivers who provide long-term care.
The Ministry noted that it will consolidate the feedback
received and work with relevant ministries to identify solutions, incorporate
proposals into policy documents, and take further action to address the issues
raised.
