Mongolia Ratifies Social Security Agreement with Austria
At its plenary session held on April 2, 2026, the State
Great Khural ratified the Agreement on Social Security between Mongolia and the
Republic of Austria.
The Government of Mongolia has been actively concluding
social security agreements with other countries to ensure social protection for
its citizens residing and working abroad.
In this context, the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social
Protection of Mongolia and the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care
and Consumer Protection of Austria have been cooperating since 2023. In
accordance with Article 9.3 of the Law on International Treaties, the two sides
finalized the draft agreement, fulfilled their respective domestic legal
requirements, and officially signed the agreement in Ulaanbaatar on May 26,
2025.
With the agreement entering into force, citizens will be
exempt from double payment of social insurance contributions in both countries.
It will also enable the aggregation of non-overlapping contribution periods
completed in the two countries, allowing individuals to qualify for pensions,
including old-age, disability, and survivor benefits. Furthermore, pensions
will be calculated based on the contribution periods under each country’s
legislation, thereby strengthening individuals’ future social security.
Mongolia has already concluded social security agreements
with seven countries—Russia, the Republic of Korea, Hungary, Poland, Türkiye,
the Czech Republic, and Kazakhstan. Austria now becomes the eighth partner
country under such agreements.
More than 92,000 Mongolian citizens are currently living and
working in countries with which Mongolia has established social security
agreements.
