Negotiations are underway between the Governments of Mongolia and Australia to establish a “Social Security Agreement”
In an effort to protect the rights and interests of Mongolian citizens
residing abroad, the Government of Mongolia has been working to conclude
bilateral social security agreements with countries where many Mongolians live
and work. To date, Mongolia has signed and implemented such agreements with Russia, the Republic of Korea, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, the Czech
Republic, and Kazakhstan.
Building on these efforts, Mongolia has been
working since 2024 to establish a Social Security Agreement with Australia. The two sides are currently holding in-person
negotiations in Ulaanbaatar from November 10 to 13, 2025.
The meeting was opened by T. Aubakir, Minister for Family, Labour and Social Protection of Mongolia, and H.E.
Mr. Leo Zeng, Ambassador of Australia to Mongolia. In their
opening remarks, both sides emphasized that concluding this agreement will play
an important role in ensuring the social security rights and
benefits of citizens who move and reside between the two countries.
The negotiation is being co-chaired by V. Rentsenkhand, Director of the Social Insurance and Savings Fund Policy Department of Ministry
of Family, Labour and Social Protection, and Kate
Youill, Director of
the Residence and International Payments Division at Australia’s Department of
Social Services.
Currently, there are over
22,000 Mongolian citizens residing in Australia.
