Initiating Negotiations for a Social Protection Agreement with the Commonwealth of Australia
The Government of Mongolia
is working to ensure social protection rights for its citizens working and
living abroad by establishing social protection agreements with countries that
host large numbers of Mongolian nationals.
In this context, on November 28, 2024, the first virtual
meeting was held to initiate negotiations for a social protection agreement
with the Commonwealth of Australia.
Representatives from Australia’s
Department of Social Services, the Ministry of Family, Labour, and Social Protection of Mongolia,
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
Mongolia, and the Australian
Embassy in Mongolia participated in the meeting. They exchanged
information on the social protection systems of both countries and discussed
organizing the first round of negotiations in January 2025, as well as drafting the agreement.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as
of 2023,
approximately 16,600 Mongolian
nationals are residing in Australia, with about 10,000 of them engaged in work.
Mongolia has already
established and is implementing social protection agreements with Russia, South Korea, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, and the Czech
Republic. Additionally, discussions are ongoing to update the agreements
with Russia and South Korea, and to establish new
agreements with Kazakhstan and Austria.
