Expert-Level Negotiations Advance Social Security Agreement Between Mongolia and Austria

The 2nd round of expert-level negotiations to establish a Social Security Agreement between Mongolia and the Republic of Austria was successfully held in Vienna on May 28 and 29, 2024.

The meeting was chaired by A. Khishigbayar, Director of the Policy and Planning Department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection from the Mongolian side, and Manfred Pьltl, Acting Head of the Division for International Social Security of the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care, and Consumer Protection, from the Austrian side.

The Government of Mongolia proposed the establishment of a social security agreement with Austria as part of its policy to ensure social protection for citizens residing in foreign countries, following the first expert-level meeting held on February 27 and 28, 2024, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Currently, about 2,500 Mongolian citizens live and work in Austria.

During the Vienna meeting, the parties reached a preliminary consensus on the general draft of the agreement and agreed to conclude on the Administrative Arrangement that sets out the measures necessary for the implementation of this agreement. This agreement will enable citizens of Mongolia and Austria to participate in the social insurance system of both countries with equal rights, and it will allow the establishment of pensions based on the sum of contributions paid and the length of service.
